Conservation, Rehabilitation, Improvement and Upgradation of Lahore Museum

This project involves the conservation, rehabilitation, improvement, and upgradation of the Lahore Museum, recently added to IDAP’s portfolio. The project focuses on enhancing the museum’s capacity, preserving its architectural integrity, and modernizing visitor experience, while ensuring the protection of its extensive historical collection.

Scope of Work:

  • Construction of New Building (Tollinton Site):
    A new structure will be developed across the road at the Tollinton site to relocate selected galleries, offices, visitor services, and other facilities from the existing museum building. This location, with its historical significance and two ancient trees, will provide additional display and operational space.
  • Restoration and Upgradation of Existing Museum Building:
    Restoration of the original museum structure, maintaining its architectural integrity and structural stability, along with upgrades to environmental control systems (MEP, ICT, Fire Control, Safety and Security Systems) and strengthening of structural elements.
  • Enhancement of Visitor Experience:
    Introduction of modern museological features including:
    • New display systems with advanced AV screens
    • Interactive explanatory panels with QR-based audio guides
    • Interactive state-of-the-art artifact display technologies

Project Phasing:

  • Phase1:
    Construction of the new block at Tollinton site, including a mosque, prayer area, cafeteria, and souvenir shops at the existing museum site. Surveys and design for Phase 2 will also be undertaken during this phase.
  • Phase2:
    Restoration of the existing Lahore Museum building. Both buildings will be connected via an underground tunnel for storage and display purposes.
