With one of the highest population growth rates globally, Pakistan faces the challenge of a substantial pediatric population grappling with poor child health indicators. Alarming statistics reveal that 33% of children are underweight, 40.2% are stunted, 17.7% are wasted, and a staggering half of them are anemic, ultimately leading to significant child mortality rates, which in turn contribute significantly to overall mortality rates. Compounding this issue is the severe scarcity of trained human resources specializing in child health, including pediatricians, pediatric super specialists, pediatric surgeons, trained nurses, and allied health professionals.
Addressing this pressing need for specialized child health training and indigenous research, the Infrastructure Development Authority of Punjab (IDAP) is taking a commendable step by establishing the University of Child Health Sciences in Lahore. This institution will cover a vast land area of approximately 259.8 kanals, on the back side of existing Children Hospital Inpatient/OT Block building and operate under the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department, Government of Punjab. Beyond providing medical education, the university will also offer training to healthcare professionals, encourage research and publications in child health, and address ancillary matters.
The ongoing execution of Phase 01 of the project includes various essential facilities like clinical examination cells, administration, libraries, secrecy branches, dining areas, retail shops, and a gymnasium, covering an area of approximately 68,417 sq. ft. In the future, Phase 02 and 03 expansions are planned, encompassing several specialized institutes and colleges which includes:
College of Pediatrics
Institute of Fetal Maternal
Institute of Pediatric Cardiology
Institute of Nutrition
College of Nursing
College of Allied Health
Institute of Basic Medical Health Sciences
Institute of Genetics and Research
Institute of Advance Technology
The establishment of this University of Child Health Sciences will play a crucial role in fostering collaboration and funding for advanced scientific research in the domains of Child Mortality and Maternal Health. Moreover, it will significantly contribute to the reduction of communicable diseases like HIV/Aids, Malaria, TB, and Hepatitis. By providing higher education in child health, the university aims to equip the next generation of healthcare professionals with specialized knowledge and skills to effectively diagnose, treat, and manage health conditions in infants, children, and adolescents.
A key aspect of the university's mission is to empower healthcare professionals with additional training to educate parents and caregivers about nutrition, immunizations, safety measures, and healthy lifestyle practices. This focus on preventive strategies will enhance disease prevention and overall well-being for children.
Furthermore, specialization in pediatric healthcare will offer healthcare professionals a rewarding career path and open diverse opportunities for professional growth. The University of Child Health Sciences in Lahore holds the promise of creating a positive impact on child health in Pakistan, addressing pressing challenges, and nurturing a generation of skilled and compassionate healthcare experts dedicated to the well-being of children.
